While often perceived as a single entity, "bhangra" encompasses various forms with distinct intentions.
Initially a derogatory term linked to cannabis use and the lower classes, pungra evolved as farmers adopted dance to attract attention to their produce. This marked a shift towards attention-seeking, later evident in "melas" (festivals) and celebrations like weddings. Bhangra further transformed with the Punjabi diaspora, moving to physical stages and incorporating costumes, instruments, and eventually digital technology. This led to "performing on a digital stage," primarily on platforms like YouTube and Instagram. The most recent iteration, "dance fitness," shifts the focus from spectacle to personal well-being, though many still prioritize self-promotion.
