What do I mean by Bhangra, But For Everybody?
When you think of bhangra, what comes to mind? Perhaps someone’s wedding reception where the party is happening the dance floor? Perhaps people in costumes on a stage? Are these for inclusive for everybody? I think not.
Parties
are typically cool for young adults, usually late into the evening past a healthy bedtime. Only for those invited, or paying a fee when thinking about clubs. Frowned upon by neighbours, councils, the Police and religions too - not for everybody.
Stages
are for people that are passionate to invest a lot of time in rehearsals, costumes, travelling and otherwise taking the show-business element very seriously. Making learning Punjabi terms important. Music is almost always used illegally. This can involve risky movements, taught by unqualified people, and also seeking external validation - again, not for everybody.
Everybody
needs to move, and if you want to move regularly to Punjabi music (a.k.a. Bhangra) then we’re for you. Taught in English by a qualified fitness instructor. Children, adults, any ethnic background, all abilities and levels. No performances, just fun and a bit of sweat, while we’re at it. Supported by human bodies and institutional bodies such as fitness regulatory bodies, religious institutions, health charities, music copyright holders, and other authorities. Now, that’s for everybody.
